Today, a photo exhibition by Ishikawa Takeshi, a long-time friend of Shiozawa, was held in Yutenji. The event has drawn a gathering of friends and associates, including Sasagawa—formerly a bisiness partner of Shiozawa and now with the publishing house Hon no Kenkyusha.
Ishikawa has attracted international attention as a photographer for his work focusing on the Hijra community. While he shared the fascinating aspects of India drawn from his personal experiences, he also noted that, in the 1980s, the Japanese publishing industry failed to grasp the depth and mystique of his subject matter—a reflection of the limited cultural understanding in Japan’s media at the time.
The people gathered was deeply engaged with Shiozawa’s work as a Shinto-Buddhist painter, recognizing its potential to convey the mysteries of Japan to the world. His accounts of enigmatic experiences during the creative process were especially well received, sparking many questions and adding a touch of humor that made the event both enlightening and enjoyable.
