Ayanokoji is located a few minutes from Shijo Station on the Karasuma subway line in Kyoto. It is a charming street in Kyoto, located almost in the center of the former Heian-kyo, and still retains the vestiges of the area where wealthy merchants used to line the streets. Nowadays, it is frequented by many foreign tourists.
On April 7th, We visited our old friend, silversmith artist Ishi-san, who was holding an exhibition at Gallery Take in Ayanokoji.
Ishi crates accessories for modern people by arranging antique silver ware. The texture of his pieces is modern yet time-honored.
On April 9th, we visited artist Tatsumi Yamada, who was introduced to us by Ishi, at the same gallery.
Yamada is a dye artist and calligrapher. He creates a variety of decorative items that are not bound by tradition, such as dynamic kimonos with unique dyeing patterns and hanging scrolls with original characters and patterns on fabric.
Both artists expressed the delicate sensibilities of the Japanese people, catching the attention of foreigners passing by Ayanokoji.
