Visit to Toshodaiji Temple

昨日の雨天から一転して晴天秋晴れ。中国の僧、鑑真和上が修行道場として開いた唐招提寺を訪れました。
A turnaround from yesterday’s rain, It’s a beautiful sunny autumn day.We visited Toshodaiji Temple where the Chinese monk Ganjin Wajo opened a training dojo.

鑑真和上の弟子たちの尽力で奈良時代に金堂や講堂が建立されたこのお寺では、日本最古の彫刻と言われる鑑真和上像が有名ですが、特別な拝観日以外は見る事ができません。
The main hall（Kondo）and auditorium were built during the Nara period by Ganjin-Wajo’s disciples, and the oldest sculpture of Ganjin-Wajo is famous, but it can only be seen on special viewing days.

鑑真は中国の仏師を連れてきて仏像の技法を日本に伝えました。
Ganjin is said to have brought Buddhist sculptors from China and introduced the techniques of Buddhist statues to Japan.

唐招提寺の金堂にある、廬舎那仏座像、薬師如来立像、千手観音菩薩立像には圧巻されます。
The seated statue of Rushanabutsu, the Yakushi Nyorai statue, and the Senju Kannon statue in the main hall of this temple are overwhelming.

中でも高さ5.36ｍの千手観音には、当時の仏像クリエーションの凄さ感じます。
Among them, the standing statue of Senju Kannon, which is 5.36m high, gives you a sense of the magnificence of the creation of Buddhist statues at the time.

1000本の手には斧やスカルや楽器や武器等、様々なものが握られています。その手のひらの一つ一つに眼が描かれています。その目で民衆を見渡し、救いの手を差し伸べるのです。この姿を見た瞬間、私達はヘビーメタルのギターがいきなりサビ部分で聞こえてきました。
The 1000 hands hold various things such as axes, skulls, musical instruments and weapons. Eyes are drawn on each palm. She looks over the people with her eyes and extends a helping hand.
The moment we see this figure, we can hear the guitar climax of heavy metal.

境内の奥まった静かな場所に鑑真和上の墓所があります。門をくぐると美しい苔蒸した地面が別世界の空間となって現れます。その中央の道を進むとお墓があり、それを静かな蓮池が取り囲む庭園設計は見事に計算された当時の美的センスが伺えます。
Ganjin Wajo’s grave is located in a quiet place deep inside the precincts. When you pass through the gate, the beautiful moss-covered ground appears as if of another world. If you go down the central road, you will find a grave surrounded by a tranquil lotus pond. The design of this garden shows the beautifully calculated aesthetic sense of the time.

Next year, Shiozawa will be publishing Ganjin Wajo’s picture book in Beijing, so we prayed that it would be a good picture book.
